About this calculator
The acre, a unit rooted in medieval English plowing (originally the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day), converts to the metric hectare at 1 acre = 0.404686 hectares (4,046.86 m²), since a hectare is defined simply as 10,000 square metres.
Land surveyors, real estate professionals and farmers move between the two constantly: the acre remains the standard land unit in the US, UK and much of the former British Empire, while hectares are the norm nearly everywhere else and in international agricultural statistics, so cross-border land deals, crop yield reports (tons per hectare) and farm size comparisons routinely need this conversion.
