About this calculator

An aspect ratio like 16:9 or 4:3 expresses the proportional relationship between width and height, independent of actual size. To scale an image, video frame or layout up or down while keeping it looking correct — not stretched or squashed — you need the missing dimension to satisfy the same ratio as the original: W2 = W1 × (H2/H1), or the equivalent for height.

This calculator solves that proportion for you, given a ratio and one known side. It’s used constantly by video editors and photographers exporting footage or images to a specific resolution, by web and app designers sizing responsive layouts and thumbnails, and by print designers scaling artwork to a new page size without distortion.
