About this calculator

A checking or savings account's advertised terms rarely show its full cost, because banks charge in several separate small pieces — a flat monthly maintenance fee (often waived above a minimum balance), a per-transaction charge on certain transfers, ATM withdrawals or overdrafts, and sometimes a separate annual fee. Adding these up over a year — monthly fee × 12, plus per-transaction charges × expected transaction count, plus the annual fee — reveals the account's true yearly cost.

This total is what actually matters when comparing accounts, since a bank advertising "no monthly fee" can still be more expensive overall than a competitor with a modest monthly charge but far lower transaction fees, depending on how a customer actually uses the account.
