About this calculator
A battery pack's voltage and capacity are built from individual cells arranged in a series (S) and parallel (P) configuration, commonly written as “nSmP”: cells wired in series add their voltages together (total voltage = S × cell voltage) while cells wired in parallel add their capacities together (total capacity = P × cell capacity), and the two groups combine to reach a target pack voltage and runtime.
This is the same design logic behind everything from an 18650-cell laptop battery (often 4S2P or similar) to EV battery packs with hundreds of cells: total energy is simply pack voltage × pack capacity (in Wh), and total cell count is S × P. This calculator takes your target pack voltage and capacity along with the individual cell's voltage and capacity, and returns the required S and P counts, total cell count, and resulting pack energy.
