About this calculator

Bit depth in digital audio determines how many discrete amplitude levels a sample can take — 2^bits possible values — and therefore sets the theoretical dynamic range, the ratio between the loudest signal the format can represent without clipping and the noise floor introduced by quantization. The standard approximation, derived from the quantization noise of a full-scale sine wave, is dynamic range (dB) ≈ 6.02 × bits + 1.76 — each additional bit adds roughly 6 dB of headroom, which is why 16-bit audio (CD quality) offers about 96 dB of theoretical dynamic range while 24-bit audio (common in studio recording) offers about 146 dB.

Audio engineers and mastering engineers use this relationship to choose bit depths appropriate to a stage of production — higher bit depth during recording and mixing to preserve headroom for processing and avoid audible quantization noise, then dithered down to 16-bit for CD or streaming delivery — and to explain to clients why “more bits” translates concretely into more usable range between the noise floor and clipping.
