About this calculator

A bowler’s average is calculated the same simple way batting or scoring averages work in other sports: total pinfall across all games divided by the number of games bowled. A bowler who scores 180, 210 and 195 across three games has a 195.0 average — the sum (585) divided by games played (3).

USBC-sanctioned leagues use this average as the backbone of their handicap system, where bowlers with lower averages receive extra pins added to their score so that players of different skill levels can compete fairly against each other in the same league. It’s also the number most bowlers watch most closely over a season, since a rising average is the clearest, simplest signal of real improvement in a sport where technique, ball selection and lane conditions all interact in ways that are hard to isolate individually.

Enter your total pinfall and the number of games bowled, and this calculator returns your bowling average instantly.
