About this calculator

Remaining brake disc life is calculated as a percentage: (current thickness − minimum thickness) ÷ (new thickness − minimum thickness) × 100, comparing how much usable material is left against the total wear allowance the disc was manufactured with. The minimum thickness is stamped on the disc itself or listed in the manufacturer's service specs, and driving below it risks structural failure of the disc under heavy braking, not just reduced stopping performance.

Drivers and mechanics run this calculation at every brake inspection or tire rotation because disc thickness wears gradually and isn't always obvious from a visual check, unlike pad wear, which is easier to eyeball. Knowing the remaining percentage helps decide whether a disc can be safely resurfaced (skimmed) — which removes material and only makes sense if enough thickness remains above minimum — or needs outright replacement.

This calculator takes the disc's current, new and minimum thickness, and returns how much brake disc life is left.
