A British Thermal Unit (BTU) — the energy needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit — equals exactly 1,055.06 joules, while a kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals 3,600,000 joules, giving the conversion 1 BTU = 0.00029307 kWh (equivalently, 1 kWh ≈ 3,412 BTU).

HVAC engineers and appliance manufacturers rate air conditioners, furnaces, and water heaters in BTU or BTU/hr, while electric utilities bill in kWh — so converting between the two is a routine step when comparing the running cost of a gas-rated appliance against an electric one, or when sizing HVAC equipment against a home's expected energy usage.
