About this calculator

The "500 rule" is a widely used starting-point formula for estimating how many grams of carbohydrate one unit of rapid-acting insulin covers: carb ratio = 500 ÷ total daily insulin dose (TDD), where TDD is the sum of all basal and bolus insulin a person typically takes in a day. A ratio of 1:10, for example, means one unit of insulin covers roughly 10 grams of carbohydrate.

This calculator is used by people with type 1 diabetes and their endocrinologists or diabetes educators as a starting point when setting up carbohydrate counting for meal-time insulin dosing or programming an insulin pump's bolus calculator — it's always meant to be fine-tuned afterward against real blood glucose responses, not used as a fixed clinical value.
