About this calculator

On a Concept2 rowing ergometer, performance is usually reported as a 500m split — the pace it would take to row 500 metres at your current effort — but comparing splits across different distances or converting them to a physical power output requires the machine's own formula: watts = 2.80 / pace³, where pace is the split expressed in seconds per metre (split time in seconds for 500m, divided by 500). This cubic relationship reflects that drag on the flywheel (and hence required power) grows with roughly the cube of speed.

Once you know your watts, projecting a finish time over a different distance just reverses the formula to find the pace that produces the same power output, then scales it to the target distance — the calculation rowers and coaches use to compare a 2k test piece against a 5k or 6k steady-state row, or to set pace targets for interval training. This calculator converts your 500m split into watts and projects your finish time over any distance you choose.
