About this calculator
The Corrected Reticulocyte Count (CRC) adjusts the raw reticulocyte percentage reported on a blood smear for the degree of anemia present, using the formula CRC = retic% × (patient hematocrit ÷ 45), where 45% is taken as a normal hematocrit. Because reticulocytes (immature red blood cells) are counted as a percentage of total red cells, a patient with a low hematocrit will show a falsely elevated reticulocyte percentage even if the bone marrow is not actually producing more cells — correcting for hematocrit removes this bias.
Hematologists and internists use the CRC to judge whether the bone marrow is mounting an appropriate response to anemia. A high corrected count points to a regenerative process such as hemolysis or acute blood loss, where the marrow is compensating by releasing young red cells early; a low corrected count in the setting of anemia suggests a hypoproliferative cause, such as iron deficiency, chronic disease, or marrow failure, where the marrow is not responding adequately.
This calculator takes your reticulocyte percentage and hematocrit and returns the corrected value, which is one of the first steps in the standard diagnostic workup of anemia.
