About this calculator

The number of words (called "entries" or "answers") a crossword grid can hold depends on its size and the fraction of squares blocked out as black cells — fewer black blocks generally means longer, more numerous word runs, but American-style grids also require every white square to be part of both an across and a down word.

A standard 15×15 American daily grid, which by convention keeps roughly 16-17% of its 225 squares black under rules like those used by major outlets, typically lands in the 76–78 word range — a figure widely cited as a soft maximum in American crossword construction guidelines (in contrast, British-style "blocked" grids commonly run leaner, with less internal connectivity).

This calculator estimates word count from grid size and block density using that same relationship, giving constructors a quick sanity check before finalizing a grid's black-square pattern.
