About this calculator

Crypto trade profit is calculated as the sale value minus the purchase cost minus all trading fees (both the fee paid when buying and the fee paid when selling), and ROI expresses that profit as a percentage of the original investment. Because crypto exchanges typically charge a percentage-based fee on both sides of a trade, fees can meaningfully eat into returns on smaller trades or on assets that moved only modestly in price, which is why factoring them in matters more than with many traditional investments.

Traders use this calculation to see their true, after-fee return on a closed position rather than the gross price change alone, to compare the efficiency of different exchanges with different fee structures, and to keep records for tax reporting, since realized crypto gains are typically taxable events in most jurisdictions.
