About this calculator
The difference quotient, [f(x+h) − f(x)] / h, measures the average rate of change of a function between two nearby points, x and x+h — geometrically, it is the slope of the secant line connecting those two points on the curve. For the quadratic f(x) = ax² + bx + c, this calculator expands the algebra fully and simplifies it down to a clean expression in a, b, x and h, then evaluates it for your chosen numbers.
This expression is the single most important stepping stone in an introductory calculus course: as h is allowed to shrink toward zero, the secant line's slope approaches the tangent line's slope at x, and the difference quotient's limit is, by definition, the derivative f′(x) — the instantaneous rate of change. Working through the difference quotient by hand for a quadratic, before ever taking a formal limit, is how most students build their first real intuition for what a derivative represents.
Enter a, b, c, a point x and a step h to get the difference quotient's value for that specific case.
