About this calculator

This calculator finds the discount factor used to convert a future cash flow into its present value: 1 / (1 + r)^n, where r is the discount rate per period and n is the number of periods. It also shows this as a percentage discount, making clear how much value a future dollar loses simply by being in the future.

Finance students use it to check discounted cash flow (DCF) homework, and analysts use the same factor when building valuation models or comparing investments with different payout timelines. Enter a rate and number of periods to get the discount factor instantly.
