About this calculator

This calculator moves past the old “multiply by 7” myth and uses a more accurate model of canine aging: dogs mature far faster than humans in their first two years, then age more slowly and steadily afterward, with larger breeds aging faster in their senior years than small ones. A widely cited 2019 epigenetic study (based on DNA methylation patterns, a molecular “aging clock”) proposed the formula human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31 for adult dogs, capturing that rapid-then-leveling curve much better than a flat multiplier ever could.

Pet owners use it to get a more realistic sense of their dog's life stage and health needs at the vet, veterinarians reference similar aging curves when explaining preventive care schedules by life stage, and breeders and trainers use it to gauge developmental milestones. Enter your dog's age (and often its size or breed) to get an estimated human-year equivalent.
