About this calculator

This calculator estimates material needs from simple area math: total wall or ceiling area divided by the coverage of one sheet (a standard sheet is 4×8 ft = 32 sq ft, or 1.2×2.4 m in metric markets) gives the sheet count, then a waste allowance — typically 10–15% — is added to cover cuts around doors, windows, and corners. Screw count is estimated from a standard fastening density, roughly one screw every 12–16 inches (30–40 cm) along each framing member the sheet crosses.

Contractors and remodelers use this kind of takeoff to price a drywall job and order material before a job starts, since running short mid-project means a delivery delay, while ordering too much wastes money and storage space. DIY renovators tackling a room addition or basement finish rely on the same math to avoid guesswork at the building-supply counter.
