eBay charges sellers a final value fee calculated as a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays — item price, shipping, and in many cases sales tax collected by eBay — rather than just the item price alone. The percentage varies by product category and by the seller's account standing, and eBay also adds a small fixed per-order fee on top of the percentage cut. This differs from platforms that charge a flat listing fee, since eBay's cost only kicks in once an item actually sells.

Because the fee is deducted automatically before payout, sellers often underestimate how much of the sale price they actually keep, especially on lower-margin items where shipping is a large share of the total.
