About this calculator

Every business cost falls into one of two buckets: fixed costs, which stay the same regardless of how much you produce or sell (rent, salaried wages, insurance), and variable costs, which rise and fall directly with output (raw materials, per-unit shipping, sales commissions). Splitting costs this way is the foundation of cost-volume-profit analysis and break-even calculations.

This calculator takes your fixed cost, your variable cost per unit, and a chosen output level, and returns the variable cost total, the combined total cost, and the split between them at that volume. Business owners and finance teams use this breakdown to see how much of their cost structure is locked in versus how much scales with activity — a key input for pricing decisions, break-even analysis, and understanding operating leverage.
