About this calculator

A concrete footing is the below-grade base that spreads a structure's load into the soil, and its required concrete volume is simply Length × Width × Depth per footing, multiplied by the quantity of footings — the same rectangular-prism volume calculation used for any poured concrete element, converted to cubic yards or cubic meters for ordering ready-mix.

Contractors, concrete estimators and DIY builders use this calculation to order the right amount of ready-mix concrete for footings under a deck, fence posts, or a foundation wall, typically per dimensions specified in structural drawings or local building code minimums (footing depth is often set by the frost line in cold climates). Ordering slightly over the calculated volume — a waste allowance of 5–10% — is standard practice since footings are excavated by hand or machine and rarely come out perfectly to spec, and running short mid-pour means an unwanted cold joint.
