About this calculator

The golden ratio, roughly 1.618, is the proportion at which dividing a length into a larger and a smaller part makes the ratio of the whole to the larger part equal to the ratio of the larger part to the smaller one. This self-similar property is what makes the golden ratio show up repeatedly across mathematics, from the Fibonacci sequence to spiral geometry.

Photographers and designers use golden-ratio division to place a focal point or crop a frame in a way many people perceive as naturally balanced, an alternative to the simpler rule-of-thirds grid. Architects, typographers and product designers also use it when sizing page margins, panel widths or logo proportions.
