About this calculator

A graduated fee (also called a tiered or bracket fee) charges one rate on the portion of an amount up to a set threshold, then a higher rate only on the portion above that threshold — the same structural idea behind progressive income tax brackets, where crossing into a higher bracket doesn't raise the rate on your entire income, only on the slice above the cutoff.

To calculate it, the base amount up to the threshold is multiplied by the base rate, the amount exceeding the threshold is multiplied by the higher rate, and the two pieces are added together — meaning the effective overall rate rises gradually as the total amount grows, rather than jumping all at once.

This structure shows up in real-world pricing such as banking overdraft fees, real estate commission schedules, subscription or usage-based service tiers, and some professional service fee structures, where businesses want to charge more for higher volumes or values without making customers dread crossing a threshold and losing money on the whole amount.
