About this calculator

A hogshead is a historical cask measure still used today in the wine and spirits trade, equal to 54 imperial gallons (about 245.5 liters) in the British/Commonwealth definition, or 63 US gallons (about 238.5 liters) in the older American liquid measure — this converter uses the imperial 54-gallon definition. One imperial gallon equals exactly 4.54609 liters, so 1 hogshead = 54 × 4.54609 ≈ 245.5 liters.

The unit survives specifically in the wine, whisky and cider industries, where barrel sizes are still quoted in hogsheads for aging and shipping — Scotch whisky is very commonly matured in “hoggies” (refill hogsheads, often ex-bourbon barrels rebuilt to hogshead capacity), and cellar records, insurance valuations and bulk trade contracts in these industries still list volume in hogsheads alongside liters, making a quick, reliable converter useful for distillers, importers and beverage logistics staff working across both units.
