About this calculator

A hydraulic press multiplies force using Pascal's principle: pressure applied to a confined, incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions, so the same pressure acts on both the small input piston and the large output piston. Since pressure = force ÷ area is equal on both sides, the output force scales with the ratio of the piston areas: F₂ = F₁ · (A₂/A₁). A small input force on a small piston can therefore produce a much larger output force on a larger piston — the tradeoff is that the large piston moves a proportionally smaller distance, conserving energy overall.

This principle is the basis of car jacks, industrial presses, hydraulic brakes, forklifts and heavy construction equipment. Mechanical engineers and machinists use this calculator to determine the output force (or required input force) and the mechanical advantage (A₂/A₁) of a hydraulic system given the two piston areas — essential for sizing cylinders correctly in press, lift and braking system design.
