About this calculator

The Miller formula, published in 1983, is one of several equations doctors and dietitians use to estimate ideal body weight (IBW) from height and sex, refining earlier formulas like Devine and Robinson. It sets a base weight for 5 feet of height and adds a fixed amount for every inch above that: for men, IBW = 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet; for women, IBW = 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Ideal-weight formulas like Miller's are widely used in clinical settings to guide medication dosing (where dosage is calculated per kilogram of ideal rather than actual body weight), to set nutritional targets, and as a quick reference point in fitness and weight-management contexts — with the understanding that they estimate a population average, not a personalized healthy weight for any one individual. This calculator takes your height and sex and returns your estimated ideal body weight under the Miller formula.
