About this calculator

An improper fraction (numerator larger than or equal to the denominator, like 17/5) represents the same value as a mixed number (a whole number plus a proper fraction, like 3 2/5); converting between them is just long division, where the quotient becomes the whole part and the remainder over the original denominator becomes the fractional part, simplified to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor.

This conversion is a core skill in arithmetic education, but it's also used constantly outside the classroom by cooks scaling recipes, carpenters and machinists reading tape measures in eighths and sixteenths of an inch, and anyone working with imperial measurements that don't divide evenly.
