About this calculator
A light-year is the distance light travels in one Julian year — about 9.461 trillion kilometers — and this calculator converts that unit into kilometers, astronomical units (AU, the Earth–Sun distance of ~149.6 million km), and parsecs (about 3.26 light-years, defined from stellar parallax). Because interstellar and intergalactic distances are far too large for kilometers to be practical, astronomers rely on light-years and parsecs as their working units.
Astronomers and astrophysicists use these conversions when comparing catalog distances given in different units, science communicators and planetarium educators use them to translate raw star-catalog data into numbers a general audience can grasp, and astronomy students use them to build intuition for the true scale of space. Sci-fi fans checking how far a fictional starship's journey would really be, and anyone curious how far the nearest star or galaxy actually is, use this tool as well.
