The long ton (also called the imperial or gross ton) is the traditional British unit of mass equal to 2,240 pounds, which converts to 1.01605 metric tonnes (1,016.05 kg) — distinct from both the US "short ton" (2,000 lb = 0.90718 t) and the metric tonne itself. The three units differ enough (a long ton is about 12% heavier than a short ton) that mixing them up in a bulk cargo or commodity contract creates a real, costly discrepancy.

The long ton remains standard in UK/Commonwealth shipping, naval architecture (ship displacement is still often quoted in long tons), and international commodity markets for iron ore and other bulk minerals, so traders, freight forwarders, and naval engineers regularly convert it to the metric tonnes used in most modern contracts and customs declarations.
