About this calculator

Margin and markup both measure profit, but relative to different bases: margin expresses profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup expresses it as a percentage of the cost. Because of this, a fixed dollar profit produces two different percentages, and the two figures are easy to mix up when pricing products.

This tool converts a margin percentage into its equivalent markup using markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin) — for example, a 25% margin converts to a 33.3% markup. Retailers, wholesalers and finance teams use the conversion to translate between margin-based pricing targets and markup-based cost-plus pricing without redoing the underlying math each time.
