About this calculator

The midpoint formula finds the point exactly halfway between two coordinates on a plane by averaging their x-values and averaging their y-values separately: midpoint = ((x1 + x2) / 2, (y1 + y2) / 2). It works because averaging each coordinate independently locates the point that splits the connecting line segment into two equal halves.

This formula is a staple of coordinate geometry courses, but it also has real applications: GIS software uses it to find the center point between two mapped locations, computer graphics use it to bisect line segments when subdividing shapes, and navigation and surveying tools use it to locate a halfway point between two known coordinates.

Enter the x and y coordinates of two points, and this calculator returns the coordinates of the point exactly halfway between them.
