Mileage reimbursement pays back an employee or contractor for using a personal vehicle for business purposes, calculated simply as miles driven multiplied by a per-mile rate. Organizations set their own reimbursement rate, often referencing a published standard rate (like the IRS standard mileage rate in the U.S., which is set annually and intended to cover gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation combined) — but many employers, and international organizations especially, set their own internal rate instead.

Employers use it to reimburse sales reps, delivery drivers, home-care workers, and other employees who drive for work without owning a company vehicle, and freelancers/contractors use the same calculation to bill clients for business travel by car. Because standard mileage rates change from year to year, it's worth confirming your organization's or country's current rate before applying it.
