About this calculator

This calculator transposes a musical note up or down by a given number of semitones, returning the resulting note name and octave. Transposition shifts every note in a piece by the same interval, moving the whole piece to a different key while preserving the relationships between notes — for example, shifting up 2 semitones moves C to D and turns a song in C major into D major.

Musicians, arrangers, and vocal coaches use transposition to fit a song to a different instrument's range (like moving a piece written for B♭ trumpet to concert pitch) or a singer's vocal range, and composers use it when modulating between keys. Enter a starting note, octave, and the number of semitones (positive to go up, negative to go down) to get the transposed note.
