About this calculator

Fastening schedules for wall and roof sheathing specify a nail spacing pattern — commonly 6 inches on-center along panel edges and 12 inches on-center in the field, per typical IRC/IBC framing requirements — which, combined with standard 4×8 panel dimensions, determines a nail count per sheet. Multiplying that by the number of sheets needed to cover a given area gives the total nail count.

This calculator takes the area to be sheathed and your chosen edge/field spacing, works out the nail count, and estimates the total weight based on a typical nail size (for ordering by the box or pound rather than counting individual nails). Framing carpenters and roofing crews use it to order the right quantity of common or ring-shank nails before starting a sheathing or roof-deck job, avoiding both under-ordering mid-job and over-ordering excess stock.
