About this calculator

This calculator estimates the bill savings from a net-metered solar system, where a two-way meter tracks both what you draw from the grid and what your panels send back. Energy you generate and use on-site offsets consumption at your normal retail rate, while any surplus exported to the grid is credited — often at a lower export or wholesale rate set by the utility.

Homeowners and solar installers use net-metering savings estimates to size a system and calculate payback period, since the value of a kWh depends heavily on whether it offsets a retail purchase or gets exported at a discount — a distinction that has become more important as many utilities have moved from full retail-rate crediting (net metering 1.0) to lower export rates (net billing).
