About this calculator

The nominal annual rate is the stated interest rate before accounting for the effect of compounding within the year, while the effective annual rate (EAR) is what you actually earn or pay once compounding is factored in. This calculator reverses that relationship: given an effective rate and the number of compounding periods per year, it solves for the nominal rate using i_nom = n × [(1 + EAR)^(1/n) − 1], where n is the compounding frequency.

This conversion matters whenever a stated APY or effective yield needs to be compared against a contract, bond, or loan that's quoted in nominal terms with a specific compounding frequency — daily, monthly, or quarterly. Bankers, bond analysts, and anyone comparing savings products with different compounding schedules use this to put rates on a truly comparable footing rather than being misled by a headline number.
