About this calculator

Pellet smokers burn compressed wood pellets at a fairly steady burn rate (pounds per hour) that depends on the target cooking temperature — higher temps mean the auger feeds pellets faster to keep the fire going. Multiplying that burn rate by the expected cook time gives a solid estimate of total pellets needed for the session.

Since pellets are typically sold in 20-lb bags, this calculator also converts the total pounds needed into bags to buy, plus an estimated fuel cost — handy for planning a long low-and-slow brisket or ribs cook without running out of pellets halfway through, or for budgeting fuel cost for a catering job.
