About this calculator
Throughput is a core operations and lean-manufacturing metric that measures how fast a process actually produces finished output: units produced ÷ time elapsed, typically expressed in units per hour. Unlike capacity (what a line theoretically could produce), throughput reflects real-world output including downtime, defects, and changeovers.
Plant managers and industrial engineers track throughput to identify bottlenecks, benchmark shifts or production lines against each other, and forecast whether current output can meet demand — it's one of the fundamental measurements underlying Theory of Constraints and continuous-improvement (kaizen) initiatives on a factory floor.
