About this calculator

The math here is a straightforward volume calculation — length × width × depth — converted into whatever unit is useful for buying soil: litres or cubic feet for bagged soil, cubic yards or cubic metres for bulk delivery. Because bagged soil volumes are usually listed in litres or cubic feet, this calculator also divides the total volume by common bag sizes to give a shopping-list bag count.

Gardeners building a new raised bed use this before ordering soil or compost, since underestimating means a mid-project trip back to the garden centre and overestimating wastes money on excess bagged soil or bulk delivery minimums. It's especially useful for irregular or multi-bed layouts, where adding up several length×width×depth volumes by hand is easy to get wrong.
