About this calculator

The rate pressure product (also called the "double product") multiplies heart rate by systolic blood pressure: RPP = HR × SBP. Because the heart muscle's own oxygen demand rises with both how fast it beats and how hard it must push against arterial pressure, RPP works as a simple, non-invasive stand-in for myocardial oxygen consumption without needing a catheter.

Cardiologists watch it during exercise stress tests, since a patient's RPP at the point angina or ECG changes appear (the "ischemic threshold") tells them how much cardiac workload the heart can tolerate before it's under strain. Exercise physiologists use the same number to gauge how hard cardiac rehab patients are working and to keep training intensity within a safe range.
