About this calculator
The relative percentage difference measures how far apart two values are relative to their size, typically calculated as the absolute difference divided by the average (or one of the values, depending on convention) of the two numbers, then multiplied by 100. Unlike a simple percent change, which treats one value as the fixed baseline, relative difference is symmetric — useful when there's no obvious 'before' and 'after,' just two measurements being compared.
It's widely used in science and engineering to compare two experimental readings or lab measurements, in quality control to check how far a measured value deviates from a reference or duplicate reading, and in data analysis to gauge how much two data points or estimates disagree without assigning one as the 'correct' baseline.
