About this calculator

This calculator applies the Revised Baux Score, a bedside formula used in burn units to estimate mortality risk: score = age (years) + %TBSA burned + 17 (if an inhalation injury is present). It extends the original Baux score, which was simply age plus percent total body surface area burned, by adding a fixed penalty for inhalation injury after research showed it independently worsens outcomes.

Burn surgeons and emergency physicians use the Revised Baux score on admission to triage severity, guide conversations about prognosis with patients and families, and benchmark outcomes across burn centers — higher scores correlate with steeply rising mortality risk, especially above roughly 100–130 points.
