About this calculator

The core of a road trip’s fuel budget is straightforward arithmetic: divide the total distance by your vehicle’s fuel economy to get the amount of fuel needed, then multiply by the current price per liter or gallon — cost = (distance ÷ fuel economy) × price. A 900km trip in a car that does 8L/100km at $1.60/L, for example, works out to 72 liters and about $115 in fuel.

Travelers use this calculation to compare route options (a longer highway route can sometimes cost less in fuel than a shorter but hillier one, since fuel economy drops on grades), to split gas costs fairly among passengers, and to sanity-check whether driving or flying is the cheaper option for a given trip. Logistics companies and rideshare drivers run the same math at scale to estimate fuel expenses across many trips and price rides or deliveries accordingly.

Enter your trip distance, your vehicle’s fuel consumption and the current fuel price, and this calculator estimates the total fuel cost for your road trip.
