About this calculator

Rounding to a place shifts a number to the nearest multiple of a chosen power of ten: positive decimal places round to tenths, hundredths and beyond, while negative places round to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand — so -2 rounds 1,482 to 1,500. Most implementations, including this one, use standard round-half-up (or round-half-to-even/banker's rounding for ties, depending on convention) at the specified digit.

The operation underlies everyday tasks from formatting currency to two decimal places, to summarizing large datasets to the nearest thousand in a report, to a student checking a homework answer against a textbook's rounded figure.
