About this calculator

For a fiber-reinforced composite, the rule of mixtures gives two bounding estimates of the elastic modulus. The Voigt (parallel, isostrain) upper bound, E_V = Vf·Ef + Vm·Em, applies when loading runs along the fiber direction; the Reuss (series, isostress) lower bound, 1/E_R = Vf/Ef + Vm/Em, applies when loading runs transverse to the fibers.

A real composite's stiffness falls somewhere between these two bounds depending on the loading direction and fiber arrangement. This calculator is used by materials engineers and composite mechanics students to get a quick stiffness estimate before turning to more detailed micromechanics models or finite-element analysis.
