About this calculator

Running cadence is the number of steps you take per minute (spm — steps per minute), calculated by dividing your total step count by the total number of minutes run. It is one of the most commonly cited running-form metrics because, unlike stride length, it is easy to measure and directly influenceable through practice.

Running coaches and sports scientists reference cadence when analyzing running economy and injury risk: a frequently cited (though debated) benchmark from research popularized by coach Jack Daniels found that elite distance runners tend to cluster around 180 steps per minute, and increasing cadence by roughly 5-10% has been shown in studies to reduce impact loading on the knees and hips in runners prone to overstriding. GPS watches and running apps display live cadence as a standard training metric alongside pace and heart rate.

This calculator takes your total step count and the duration of your run in minutes and returns your cadence in steps per minute, so you can compare it to common training benchmarks.
