About this calculator

Stride length — the distance covered in one full stride (both legs, left foot strike to left foot strike) — scales fairly predictably with height. As a rough estimate, walking stride is often approximated as about 0.41–0.45 × height, while running stride runs longer and grows further with pace, since a faster cadence means covering more ground per stride.

From the estimated stride length, dividing 1,000 meters by the stride in meters gives roughly how many steps per kilometer you'll take. Runners and walkers use this to sanity-check step counts from a fitness tracker or phone that lacks GPS, and to calibrate pedometers that rely on a fixed stride-length setting rather than GPS distance.
