About this calculator
This calculator applies a safe withdrawal rate — most famously the 4% rule from William Bengen's 1994 research and later the Trinity Study — to a portfolio balance to estimate the annual and monthly income it can sustainably generate without running out of money over a typical 30-year retirement. The math is a simple multiplication (balance × rate), but the rate itself comes from historical analysis of stock and bond returns across worst-case retirement start dates, including years with poor market timing.
People planning early retirement (the FIRE movement), financial advisors modeling client drawdown plans, and pre-retirees deciding how large a nest egg they need use this to translate a lump-sum savings goal into a livable income figure, or work backward from a target income to the portfolio size required. Enter your portfolio value and a withdrawal rate to see the resulting income.
