About this calculator

This calculator computes the Schwarzschild radius: Rs = 2GM/c², the radius to which any mass must be compressed for its escape velocity to reach the speed of light, forming an event horizon beyond which nothing — not even light — can escape.

Astrophysics students and enthusiasts use it to see how extreme the compression required for black hole formation really is — squeezing Earth's mass into about 9 millimeters, or the Sun's into about 3 kilometers. Enter a mass to get its Schwarzschild radius.
