About this calculator

Scientific notation writes any number as m × 10^e, where the mantissa m is constrained so its absolute value is at least 1 and less than 10, and e is an integer exponent — so 6,371,000 becomes 6.371 × 10^6, and 0.000045 becomes 4.5 × 10^-5. It's the standard way to handle very large or very small numbers without a string of zeros, and it makes comparing magnitudes trivial by just comparing exponents.

This calculator takes any decimal number and converts it into proper scientific notation, normalizing the mantissa and computing the correct exponent automatically. Students in science and math classes, and anyone working with measurements from chemistry, physics, or astronomy — where values routinely span from atomic scales to astronomical distances — use it to quickly check conversions and homework.
