About this calculator

SHA-3 is the newest member of the Secure Hash Algorithm family, standardized by NIST in 2015 (FIPS 202) and built on the Keccak sponge construction — a fundamentally different internal design from SHA-1 and SHA-2, chosen partly as insurance in case a weakness were ever found in the older SHA-2 family. It comes in four output sizes — 224, 256, 384 and 512 bits — each producing a fixed-length hexadecimal digest no matter how long the input text is, and any change to the input, however small, produces a completely different digest.

Because the transformation only runs one way, SHA-3 hashes are used to verify that a file or message hasn’t been altered, to fingerprint data for deduplication, and as a building block inside digital signatures and other cryptographic protocols. Software developers, security engineers and cryptography students use a hash generator like this one to compute a SHA-3 digest of arbitrary text and check it against a known value.
